Mindfulness restores you to sanity
I have practised meditation for the last 25 years and run a meditation group for the majority of that. However in all that time my personal practice had been a bit hit and miss. Then six years ago I attended a 6 week Mindfulness Course which helped me to, not only meditate on a daily basis but, also practice mindfulness in my everyday life.
Sane New World
It all started one cold frosty morning late November 2014, as I drove up the M4 listening to the Ruby Wax
book, Sane New World, having light bulb moments. As I listened I kept saying,’ I have felt like that, oh it’s not just me’ and ‘ I want to know more about this mindfulness.
What I loved about this book, was that Ruby was sharing her story and how by practicing mindfulness every day she can stay sane. Ruby Wax – comedian, writer and mental health campaigner – shows us how our minds can jeopardize our sanity. With her own periods of depression she explains how our busy, chattering, self-critical thoughts drive us to anxiety and stress. Ruby went on to complete a masters in Mindfulness at Oxford university and now has written another book and has a mindfulness practice.
So my mindfulness journey began, I started reading books, downloaded a couple of apps, went on the course and started to practice daily. For the last two years I have been deepening my study with the ‘Kadampa Meditation Centre‘, which has taken it to another level.
I will always be grateful to Ruby for showing me the way especially when the ‘menopause’ kicked in and added to the madness, but that’s a story for another time!
